What Happens in Heaven?
I often get asked questions about what happens in heaven. Do we have jobs? Where will we live? Do we have spouses? Do we live as we did on earth? What about the different crowns? The Bible gives us some answers.
Where will we live? John 14:2 states, “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?” Jesus speaks these words to reassure believers that there is a special and welcoming place for them in Heaven. “Mansions” is often interpreted as rooms and not massive structures where we will live in earthly luxury. The blessing of heaven is not the size of your house, but the eternal presence/relationship with God.
Are we married? We are all the Brides of Christ, meaning that type of close, intimate relationship on earth (marriage) will be the same type of relationship we share with Jesus in heaven.
Matthew 22:30: “At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.”
Luke 20:34-35 “Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage.”
Revelation 19:6-8 “Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: “Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give Him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and His bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear.” (Sinless)
Do we have jobs? Although not specified, it appears our “job” will be to fellowship and worship God. In Genesis, God gave man dominion over the earth, plants, and animals, with a responsibility to care for these things and to go forth and multiply. There are no such tasks on the “new earth.”
Revelation 21:3 “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be His people, and God himself will be with them as their God.”
Revelation 21:4 “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” (I interpret this to mean there will not be death for human or animal alike. No meat for food. The former things [needs] will pass away and we will live in communion with God)
Revelation 21:5 “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His servants will worship Him. They will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads. Night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.”
Crowns in Heaven: I believe that the most important thing to remember about the crowns is that in the end, we all throw them at the feet of Jesus, indicating that whatever race we ran for the Kingdom of God, we are all equal. There won’t be ego and competition to see who won the highest crown, but we will all be humbled and reverent to the Lord. There is no power struggle or arrogance in Heaven, but we all willingly and happily submit to the will of God.
Revelation 4:9-11 “Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, the 24 elders [leaders/representatives of all of us] fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.” In other words, we relinquish all honor and glory to God, no longer in need of such things.
Crown of Life James 1:2
Crown of Righteousness: 2 Timothy 4:8
Crown of Glory: 1 Peter 5:4
Crown of Rejoicing: 1 Thessalonians 2:19
Incorruptible Crown: 1 Corinthians 9:25
The aforementioned scriptures lead us to believe that we will happily dwell with God, our previous needs gone, and we will bask in the Light and the Glory of God.
Revelation 21:1-2 “Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.”
Isiah 65:17 “See, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.” (We won’t remember what was)
These scriptures tell us that not only will the earth be new, but so will we. There won’t be power struggles, strife, or hardships because our “job” in heaven is to be with and worship God as the loving Creator He is. With pain and suffering gone and forgotten, we will be free to live eternity with joy and peace that is unknown to us on earth.
In summary, do not worry about earthly things because when you get to heaven, such things will neither be valued or important there. Spend your life building treasures for the Kingdom of God/Heaven, and then “earthly things” won’t seem so important here. God has a plan, and that plan is outlined in scripture. Follow the examples and precepts of scripture, and the questions answered in this sermon will no longer be questions at all. God bless with love, Lisa ><>
